“The Voice” Philippines Intensifies

"The Voice" Philippines Premiere Telecast

“The Voice” Philippines Premiere Telecast

ABS-CBN launches the highly anticipated Philippine franchise of the “The Voice” via a primer aired last Sunday and its premiere telecast aired today, June 15.  As expected, almost all of the Philippines tuned in to tonight’s episode with netizens bombarding micro-blogging site Twitter with various reactions.

The singing competition hosted by Toni Gonzaga with sister Alex and ex PBB Teens housemate, Robi Domingo managed to keep viewers on their seat.  The biggest draw for the show however, will be coming from the show’s judges/coaches/mentors: Pop Princess, Sarah Geronimo, Tony Award Winner, Leah Salonga, Black-Eyes Peas member Apl de Ap, and rock icon, Bamboo.

The four judges started screening the first batch for the Blind Auditions.  The highlight of tonight’s show was when Thor Dulay’s rendition of the Whitney Houston classic “I Have Nothing” convinced all four judges to turn their chairs his way.  In the end, the 32-year old backup singer chose Apl de Ap.

Jessica Sanchez the next “Miss Saigon”?

When it rains, it pours, at least for American Idol Season 11 runner up, Jessica Sanchez!

Will Jessica be the next Miss Saigon?

The 16-year old diva may not have won the plum prize in American Idol but the Fil-Mexican American powerhouse makes up for her loss by headlining several high-profile gigs.

Fresh from inking a record deal with Interscope Records and a possible multi-episode arc in the hit Fox show Glee, she is now rumored to be seriously in contention for what could possibly her chance to score an Oscar ala Jennifer Hudson, a starring role as Kim in the film adaptation of the hit musical ‘Miss Saigon”.

Miss Saigon is the musical adaptation of the opera “Madame Butterfly,” and tells of a tragic tale of doomed love between a Vietnamese prostitute and an American G.I. in Saigon during the Vietnam War.

No release date has been announced for the film, but Sanchez is not the only actress vying for the part: The rumor mill claims “Glee” guest star Charice is also in consideration.

Jessica has never acted before except for her Cricket commercial but she has already received support from the original “Miss Saigon” of Broadway, Lea Salonga, who was a mere 18 when she took on the role.  Leah has this to say:

“If she’s the one that they’ve chosen, or she’s somebody in serious consideration, then that’s a good thing.  We all know she’s talented, we all know she’s actually quite beautiful.”
